We stayed here end of May 2011. I am 35 and my partner Lily is 25 (yes, lucky me :)... We were by far the youngest guests at the hotel but it was a very relaxed atmos so everyone seemed to get on just fine. The staff were genuine, welcoming and extremely helpful and friendly and really helped to make our stay enjoyable. They even brought a complimentary cake and bottle of champagne to our room on our first night as it was my girlfriend's birthday. The hotel is beautiful (I would rate it a high 4*; not 5) and well located for the town if you don't mind a walk (around 10-15 mins and is uphill on the return), but is excellent for getting out to the mountains as it is on the outskirts of the city. You would need a car though but they do have onsite underground parking at no charge. Very handy! Would return for certain.
Struggling to think of any negative aspects of our stay other than the hotel is situated next to a pretty busy road so a little noise is to be expected if you room is near it. A neighbour's dog barked a bit but you can't blame the hotel for that. We were probably the only guests on our floor (3rd) so can't comment on any internal noise, we heard none. We had bad weather for most of our 5 day stay so spent more time in the hotel than one would normally so did get to know it pretty well – and I honestly can't think of any other 'negative' comments.

Excellent staff in all departments. The Reception staff were interested in helping us to arrange suitable day-trips and gave useful advice on other places to visit. The bar and restaurant staff were very friendly and efficient. All staff spoke good or excellent English and many in the restaurant/reception/bar areas also spoke other European languages fluently.
The à la carte menu for evening meals was good but was the same for 7 days, so we chose to eat in Funchal for three nights. This might be a problem for some people because the hotel is up a steep climb (15- 20mins) from the centre of Funchal unless going back by Taxi (C.3 euros) We didn't mind this and walked down and back many times during the week we were there. In fact, the location in relation to the main street, promenade, marina and harbour, cable car, Cathedral and tourist area of Funchal was much preferable to being away from the centre in the "hotel areas".

It was a small hotel and therefore there was good personal service from all the staff that we were in contact with. Took advantage of the back massage with the free foot massage!
Thought the in-house restaurant was slightly over-priced but there was little else available in the immediate vicinity without having to trek into the centre of Funchal.

Attention to detail throughout all they did. Efficient unobtrusive service friendly and helpful staff - willing to go the extra mile. Hotel quiet, clean and well placed for all activities -able to book anything through hotel who gave excellent advice
Only the lack of tea / coffee making facilities in the room - had mini bar and room service

The hotel was really nice, but what really made it was the staff - they are all wonderful and make your stay an absolute pleasure. Also - the Tropical Shower in the Spa - IT IS AMAZING!!!
Just a bit too city based (with traffic noise) for my liking, but certainly handy for the newer part of Funchal and the shops, so would not critisize it for this - just a matter of personal taste.
